Default Contest | Non-Fiction | Winter/Holiday (December 2006)

Old Man Winter, if he hasn’t already snowed you in, is just around the corner. It’s December, and we want to see some well-crafted retellings of winter and holiday memories. Whether it’s chestnuts roasting over an open fire, snow-crusted mittens after a day of sledding or family feuds at the dinner table, pick a memory and tell it to the world – or at least to the judges. Maximum word count is 1,000.

You have until December 22nd to post your submissions. Good luck!

I sat in the cart, a single horse pulling me along. She sat beside me, staring at the falling snow. My heart raced as I tried to gather the courage to tell her how I felt, the whole reason I had invited her in the first place.

"Hannah I..."

"Hm?" she questioned, looking at me. Her captivating brown eyes locked with mine, a whirlpool of warmth. Her pink tinged lips, flushed from the cold, longed for me to kiss them. Her face was that of an angel's. I wanted so badly to hold her in my arms, to stroke her silky hair, to tell her I loved her.

"Hannah, I... I...I lo-"

"Oh, look! A deer!" she exclaimed, pointing at the cute creature. At that moment, I wanted to shoot it. 'Dammit, dammit, dammit!' I swore in my head. 'Just tell her.'

"Hannah, I... I love you," I said, looking back into her eyes. She stared at me in shock and I went for the chance, locking her in an embrace. She pulled back a little in surprise, but relaxed after a minute and returned the kiss. I opened my lips and she responded, going in for an even deeper expression of my love for her, our tongues weaving an intricate dance in each others' mouths. We stayed like that for what seemed like hours before releasing from each other. We were both breathing heavily, but from lack of air or total surprise, I cannot say. Looking into each others' eyes, love and hope in them, she fell on top of my shoulders, snuggling closer for warmth and love. I wrapped my arm around her, bringing her closer. A true lover's embrace.
