There aren't 50 important writers in England today. I doubt if there ever was that many at any given time in England or America. Any country is lucky to have a few important writers. The rest are popular hacks pandering to the lowest common denominator in the reading public.

It didn't say "the most important 50 writers," it said the 50 most important people in publishing. Which are animals of a very different colour. In fact, I am not sure there is even a single writer on that list, but I'm going to check on that as soon as I have time to do so.
