Default Word count

I wouldn't worry about how many pages or how many words you've got, as it tends to cramp your story. Just write, and don't think about how much. It's the quality that counts. My novel has about 400 pages, but I didn't figure that out til I was done. At that time I was just curious.

I am a new writer, being published this year. I am doing my final edits now, and the novel is 107.000 words, which I guess its a little below average for well-known writers but still a good length.

As to people saying "dont worry about length", well, if you struggle to get your story above 80K words I think it is safe to say you are either rushing through it, or it is in fact more of a short-story / short-novel.

I came across some of the same issues on the first draft of my novel, what I did was create a subplot in the story that really built it out and made it both better and longer, plus helped with character backgrounds and development.

Default Words per novel page

Yes, I think even in 10.5 font you should come out at around less than 1,000 words per page in a regular sized novel.

It's very interesting to study the typography and publishing marks of the top publishers.

Ill add my two pennies.

From what I've read the average count is 250-300. However, I counted the words in several of the novels I own , spy and sci-fi paper backs, and the average was just under 400.

I don't know how many in the average novel but this letter I'm trying to get finished is at 147 pages, letter-size, 10.5 font and about 750 words per page.

How many pages is a letter supposed to have, anyway?

I am sorry, but I joined this forum because of this question and I feel a bit happy seeing a thread in 2008 is still helping and calling people
But, like everybody says, we really don't need bother with the pages (maybe is just a curiosity) because that will be a "problem" with the publisher.
I hope Q Wands is right about the average novel is between 80 000 and 120 000 words.
