A six sentence story -
Elaine knew the children didnít like her, they were like shadows as she moved about the house, one minute quietly playing or reading then gone if she entered the same room.
Stop being over-sensitive, for heavenís sake theyíre children, she thought, and determined to enjoy the warm summer day she pushed aside her irritation, left her deckchair and walked towards the edge of the pool. The water looked inviting; she anticipated its coolness as she slowly moved down the steps, entered its stillness and floated gently, enjoying the water as it swept against her parched skin. She closed her eyes.
She sensed their nearness before she felt their arms gently twine around her shoulders, felt their soft hands pushing; she pushed herself upright trying to loosen their grip. Solemn eyes, tawny with golden streaks stared down at her, unwavering as she strove to keep her body upright, until the gentle humming of bees invaded her ears as her head, awash with the fragrance of the summer roses, slowly descended, her wide bewildered eyes catching their smiles as the sun dimmed and the cool blue water closed around her.
