Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.
For those who don't know, it is a historical romance with fantastical elements, about a World War 2 era nurse who is transported back to 18th century Scotland.
A year or two ago, I made the mistake of watching the series first. It hooked me from the word go and I loved it so much, I wanted to read the book.
Alas, the series is so faithful to the book that reading the first few chapters was like reading the DVD.
So I gave it time to get out of my system before I borrowed the book again and now I'm getting immersed in the words. I love Diana Gabaldon's descriptions of 20th century Inverness and later, the castle Leoch.
Even though the story is in first person, told from the point of view of Claire, the people and places she encounters really jump off the page.
