Default Existential Crisis

24th March 2014

I screamed. I grabbed the nearest object, my mother’s vase, very unfortunately, and threw it against the wall across the room. I screamed again. I half ran to the door, and I started to kick. And again. And again. I needed repetition. And the door was right there. Bang. And bang. Then footsteps.

‘Did she take her pills?’ I heard her muffled voice from the stairs.

No I did not take my fucking pills. I ran down the stairs, ignoring her calls, grabbed the keys to his Porsche, and slammed the front door behind me. I threw myself behind the wheel of the silver conveyance and stepped on the pedals. I let the window down, and I could hear the gravels crack beneath the black rubbers as they picked up speed. I turned on the radio. ‘Hey Jude’ was playing. I sang along as my scorched brown hair flew with the wind, my eyes dry and wet at the same time. I got on the highway, flying past a few baker’s dozen cars. I paid no attention to anything else. It was just me, the Beatles, and the evening wind as I looked at the stretch of light orange and pink ahead of me, luring me ahead. Just straight ahead. So I just drove. And drove. It went on like this for awhile. Just me and my songs, and the interminable stretch of road before me.

The moon was up by the time I got home. I unlocked the door with calmer hands than before. She was sitting there, smiling up at me as I threw the keys by the counter.

‘Better?’ She was still smiling.

‘Better.’ I said. I smiled too.

Getting behind the wheel and driving has saved my sanity more than once.

Just be sure, if you take yourself out, don't take anyone else out with you.

You've never been so angry or hurt you could kill someone, got in your car and just drove until your eyes cleared and your hands stopped shaking and your breath evened out and suddenly you top that rise or make that corner and there's the whole world laid out in front of you and you see its beauty and realize all that destruction you wished on someone else wasn't necessary and you pull over and you thank God for Henry Ford?

I have.

Well, yes I think I can recall a few moments where I wanted to disembowel somebody.

However, I usually go for a walk.
As getting my car out the garage and all that shenanigans will just irritate me further and have me hurt my car instead.
And I'd not want that.

I like the little dialogue at the end.
it reminded me of an add on television.
better is always a good word to use when in a state of anger. it has a calming effect.

Ahh no worries Ed, I don't find pleasure in mutilating the bodies of people I love in a wreckage of silver and glass. I make my own ride.

You, darling, seem smitten by the images.
Just shaken a bit.

Get used to it.
You will learn to bend to it.

The bend will lead you to
your new face and moon.

A silence.
A nod.
Then, there was more time.

Hey LW! Nice one. I rarely venture out of Member's Only, however I saw your title listed and I instantly ventured. I like most everything about your short piece; one thing I think of is: there might be both confusion over, and a short distance between existential and lack-of-meds crises. You might exp[lore that for a little bit.

Hey Nokturnal! Nice to see you.
Hey Ed! How's yer ass? Ha!
