Serious assassin or humorously named Assassin?

Humorous e.g. Mack the Spade - I leave it to your imagination how he kills...

Who is this assassin? Where's he from? What's his background? Sketch out a little backstory for him, and find a name appropriate to that background. If he's a former CIA man from the Bronx he probably won't be named Nigel, but if he's a Mossad-trained Israeli, there's no problem calling him Malachi!

I think you should give him some inconspicuous name that doesn't quite fit with his character. Not every Saddam Hussein grows up to be like his namesake and neither does every Mohandas Gandhi. Most kids are misnamed (like me ) and that should hold true even in a fictional setup.

I've chosen Bahadur - which means bold and brave in Persian for my serious assassin, but I now need a humorous one...

Hm, how about Shaitan for Devil or Imp? But then again, no self-respecting parent would call their kid that.

I seriously think you should go for a misnomer. They tend to work best.

I personally try to stay away from character names that say anything about the character unless I am writing tongue-in-cheek, very low-brow comedy. A cheesy name is something that can turn a reader against a story faster than you can say, "Gunther Killgore".

My general rule of thumb: a name should be common, anonymous, and pronouncable (I hate those made-up names in sci-fi or fantasy that are all syllables and can't be spoken out loud).

THe problem with giving an assasin an obviously murderous name is that it's unbelievable that he'd be a useful assasin because he'd be sort of suspicious. For a comic assasin, I'd recomend a name that sort of implies bumbling idiot or some sort of "cute" non-violent name.

My favorite name for an assasin would have to be "Carth", something about that name gives off evil.

Colin, Derek... why do assassins have to have special names? It would be a real bummer getting out of the country after if your passport said you were Mr Knifely Shootgun.

I'd like to see an assassin named Melvin, or Poindexter. That would explain a lot, actually.

Or Herbert, or Egbert, or Humphrey...geez, any old -bert will do

This thread has been down for a year-and-a-half...keep the old, mummified threads from being reanimated as zombies, please. The new threads need attention, not ones from members who haven't been active in a long time.

Nadia for a girl, Vladislav for a boy.

(I guess in my mind, assassins are Russian).

Why not just call him Bob?

I bet you have never heard of an assassin named Bob. It ought to bring out the funnies.

How about Bill Bludgeon.Hell, give them code names like the assasins in Kill Bill.
Ideas that popped into my head:Toxic.Bullet.Knife.Sword.Slicer.Ripkins.Death .Grim.Venom.Cain.Poison.Hate.
Those would be funny or serious..depends on how you write them.
Or make him or her Native American and call him/her Deathbringer or Lillysmasher....hehehe
This was way to much fun for me.

Cain or Able...those really sound like they would kill you....

I'm Able to kill you.
I'll Cain you to death.

Great names...backed with Bible scariness.

This is fun.
