Default Sitting down and staying focused!

Hey everybody. I want to invite all of you to participate in a new way of staying focused on writing - Word Wars!

The idea is that the most difficult part of writing a novel is staying focused for a period of time, without getting distracted, and making the words appear on the page. What better way to motivate yourself to stay focused than to make a competition out of it? Word Wars is a writing competition based on word count. Participants all write for a set amount of time, at the same time, in hopes of ending with a higher word count then their competitors.

Word Wars is being organized via facebook group which can be found here There will be at least one war a day, we can organize more if enough people want to, and we'll be varying the times of the wars so that everyone has a chance to participate regardless of schedules.

I wrote a personal best last night doing this, 1250 in an hour. My competitiveness drove me to stay focused on writing rather than letting my mind wander. It had the same effect for the others who participated. I hope we can spread the word so that other writers can join in!

I've been doing them in a chatroom for over a year. Also use writeordie.

writeordie doesn't quite work as well for me. I tried it during Nanowrimo last year and I found myself just turning the speakers off haha.
Just thought it'd be a fun way to bring some more writers together.

Once I finish plotting, organizing my ideas, and worldbuilding for my novel, I'll consider trying this!

I really like this idea. I find I need lots of little goals. So I have requested to join the group.

Where could I join those wars, I'd like to try myself. That would help me somehow to manage staying focused.

I use Word Wars on Facebook (it is a group) and this chatroom or writeordie allows you to do them by yourself.

What an amazing idea. Procrastination sometimes drives me crazy, as I can't overcome it. In this way it'll be much easier. Moreover, I'm a rather competetive kind of person.

If you go out and buy a nice computer chair it helps. The thing I found worked best for me was to find a "writing buddy," someone that will help me stay focused and keep me from getting up and getting distracted. I also find buying several rolls of duct tape and having them wrap me to the chair works wonders. Make sure that the computer chair has wheels, will fit through the bathroom door, and the that the seat and lid are up. It also helps to have good aim. If your a woman or you have to do the dirty duty, I'm sorry I haven't figured that part out yet.

LOl is just that I made a conscious decision not to join, one of those things haha
I would however join the game if there was another way.

I would have thought the best way to stay focussed was to not play silly word games, and actually do some writing...no?

I reward myself with a packet of cigarettes and a six-pack of beer for each thing I finish writing. That has to last me until I finish my next piece. Luckily I'm only doing this with short stories and not my novel-in-progress!
