Default Fanfiction

I know I am new here and thus, have no right to request you change anything about your amazing site, but I just wanted to make a suggestion: a spot where writers can write fan fiction for their favorite tv shows or movies. It's my favorite thing to write.

Thank you for reading!!!

I agree. I've only been here a short (very short) time but seeing the fanfiction interspersed with the real fiction only serves to cheapen both. They're completely different types of writing.

Hi guys, no matter how you perceive it, it's still fiction. Isn't it?

Your work will be read if you post it in the Fiction forum, just put a disclaimer at the top, saying it's fanfiction and you'll be all set and ready to garner readers you wouldn't catch if we were to have a fan fiction section. (Some people will just never even look at fan fiction, while they might when it's in the general fiction forum. )

To expand on that. The disclaimer is needed as you are using material not of your own creation.

Really. As far as I'm concerned a fan fiction disclaimer would mean "Do not read." Other sites ban it -- and for good reason. Aren't there plenty of fan fiction sites out there anyway?

Hands up: Who knew Fifty Shades of Grey was born of fanfiction?

Yeah. So now everyone is going to point to a fluke and say -- see, there's a point to it after all.

I'm not. I just wanted to make the point that it can be successful. I wasn't particularly impressed with the original muse behind 50 Shades and I won't be buying it and reading it myself either.

However you can't dismiss it's success.

I never knew it was fanfiction, maybe because I have not read the work it's based upon, but it does make for an enjoyable read on a lounger in the sun.
Had i known it is fan fiction, I would never have touched it. In fact normally I steer clear of hyped up books, but what can I say, I'm a sucker for romance.

What I can figure out is what that story has to do with Twilight. ????

From what I hear it's closer to a sex-up of Wuthering Heights or some other gothic virgin in the old house book.

I havent read Fifty Shades of Grey but I saw a documentary about it that made out she started the book as Twilight fan fiction because she liked it so much. But she only set it in the same city or something.

So it's not really fan fiction, which means all those people saying it is and how it shows how people can be successful with that kind of thing might just be wrong after all.

Me? I'll stick to creating my own characters and stories rather than piggy backing someone elses hard work.

Seeing as it started with FanFiction in general, I don't think I'm going too off topic here.

Why is FanFiction so frowned upon? Fanficiton is ridiculously easy to write, and most of its deplorably crappy. It can be funny sometimes how bad it is (as FanFicion Friday on Topless Robot will show you), or it can just be disgustingly bad, or it can be truly interesting. In any case, it can be fun to read, and it does help people learn to write by giving them practice.

It is my opinion that some people try writing, and have hard times coming up with their own stories lines, and because of that, they don't go very far, which leaves them with very little skill in other areas as well. But if they start writing something where most of the thought process is taken out, they can focus on increasing their writing skill. Then once they feel comfortable, they can go back to writing their own stuff.

Idk. I personally think writing a little FanFiction now and again is kind of a nice breather between novels. (I like how i say that as if i've written more than one...or one in general.)

I agree, <3Less. I always think fanfiction is a way of practicing one area of writing at a time - maybe introducing your own character to ones already written, or figuring out your own plot without having to create the world it takes place in.

I also generally dislike reading fanfiction, because most of it seems to be 'omg I love this character, see how awesome he/she is, and he/she would totally be in a relationship with this completely unlrelated character'. It's the sort of thing that's much more fun to write than to read, at least for me. I've written a bit (I even created a fan video once *shameface*) but I wouldn't ever let anyone read it, because it's like a window into the cheesy part of my mind.

Having said that, it's all writing, and if people are posting it to get feedback, then this is the place to post it. If they're posting to be part of the whole community that's built up around their fandom, then they probably won't be posting it here.

Personally, I love fanfiction and I wrote kind of a lot of it, especially Doctor Who Fanfiction. But, as some of the others who already posted here, I am not so sure if it really belongs here. As a person who has wrote tons of fanfics myself and been in a lot of fandoms and fan communities, I can state that not many people actually write fanfiction for the sake of writing a good piece of literature.

Fans just love the characters a lot and they want to 'play with them', put them in weird situation, they sometimes create a random character that actually represents them and make that character meet their hero in order to make true one of their personal, fan fantasies. I do not bash fanfiction, I love it and I will probably always keep writing Doctor Who fics, because I adore the characters from that show. But I do not plan to post any of that here because I do not think it is the right place for it. There are tons of forums, websites and places where you can post fanfiction and receive reviews from those who actually want to read that sort of thing.

I am not saying this to discourage the ones who want to write fanfics and I have only been here for a day, but that is just my opinion. I believe that if the admin and moderators of this website would have thought fanfiction could fit in here, they would have added a special section for that on their own from a long time ago. I'm just saying...

You're into Dr. Who? Who would have guessed?

I just don't see anything wrong with fanfiction and don't see that it deserves the sneers.
You walk into an art museum and you see very good painters copying masters' works. They are learning something. Maybe they then paint a simlilar painting in the same gesture or technique at some point.

Young musicians start off playing covers of existing songs, copying riffs by their favorite guitarists. Some of the greatest bands alive play covers of other band's work.

Nobody gives them shit about it.

This could be a way of learning. It could lead to somebody changing the basic world to create something original. "50 Shades of Pay" good example. Along with about a million James Bond knock-offs back in the sixties.
Or, maybe somebody just keeps writing Star Wars or Twilight stories their whole life. Having fun. Getting cool comments from other fans.
So what?

But when it comes to publishing it, there are considerations. And every publisher--and a site like this is a publisher--makes their own decision on how to handle it.

Fan fiction has become more popular and widespread since the advent of the World Wide Web according to one estimate, fan fiction comprises one third of all content about books on the Web.

Doubt much existed before the web.
Find it VERY hard to believe that a third is fanfic.
Did they mention their methodology.

A.) It isn't the same as copying the style of a painting, it's painting the sameething and adding your self portrait to it.

B.) I can not believe Fifty shades of Grey was mentioned in a postive manner in any way shape or form on a writing website. (Poorly written, glaring plot-holes, and poorly developed, not to mention out right dumb, main characters.)

I do believe fanfiction has a place, just not on sites like this. Its plagirism. Those in charge may disagree, but I know I won't be reading anything that has Fanfiction attached to it.

I agree with you on 50 Sheds of Hay.
But have to say, it does indicate that at least fanfic can lead to financial success.
Thing is, my understanding of both those books I haven't read is that it's really very, very different. Like billionaire instead of vampire?

So what I'd wonder, and have mentioned on other sites, is why not write your fanfic---but with original characters and settings?
Might be a step in a process, but actually I think most fanfic folks are quite happy in that little universe. Like people who write haiku or play blues.

I concur, and have done something similar in the past. Was inspired my a character in a video game, decided to incorporate a similar but different character in my work.

Video game?
Now that's interesting. "Mario Does PacMan".
Just teasing... but that is interesting.

When I think about it, what are the films based on games, like Street Fighter and Laura Croft, but fanfic?

How about films based on children's toys and games; Transformers and Battleships?

Which is very different to the children's market for Disney (and similar) who have a symbiotic relationship between movies/books/toys/clothes/games etc. which are normally developed all together for marketing.

I don't think that counts, it's one thing to turn a book into a movie, its just taking the same story and putting it into a different format.

And if you must know it was Reaver from Fable 3 XP
