Default Internal dialogue

There has been a lot of talk about italics lately, and I wanted to ask a question without high jacking someone else's thread. What do you think of using italics to indicate internal dialogue when the character is thinking? If not italics, then how should it be done?

It is according to all my guides an acceptable usage of italics. I use them in third person narration. I found it was too frequent in first-person so I don't and just make it clear by the words and context that he is talking to himself.

It's fine. I used to use them myself, but moved onto just using regular type. But again, it's fine.

Honestly though, it's probably best to not worry about many of these things. I did read that thread the other day and I can't say I've ever felt 'insulted' by reading italics. But then again, people rarely surprise me these days.

Some 'characters' that exist in our world could certainly make good writing material.
